Two inches here, one and a half inches for architects, and the same Board administers both. Rule 1.11.1 of Part 202: “The seal to be used by the registrants are to be circular in form and 2 inches in diameter.” Rule 3.4 of Part 201 sets the architect seal at one and one-half inches. A firm ordering both at once is the classic way to get one of them wrong. The Mississippi engineer and surveyor range at Pt. 901, R. 6.2.2.b is 1 5/8 to 2 inches, so two inches is exactly right here and merely at the top of the band there.
The placement rule is superimposition, not adjacency. Rule 1.11.3 requires the registrant to superimpose the signature and the date across the face of the seal. Three signature formats qualify: a manual signature, a digital signature with an electronic authentication process, or, for PDF formats, an electronic scanned signature that accurately depicts the licensee’s actual signature. A generic signature font does not accurately depict an actual signature.
The legend is Registered Landscape Architect State of Mississippi, with your name and registration number. Mississippi uses Registered Architect State of Mississippi for architects at Pt. 201, R. 3.4, and the two are not interchangeable. Nothing about a firm, a discipline or an expiry date is authorized on the face.

Is a seal required in Mississippi?
Rule 1.11, headed Official Seal, carries the whole regime. Rule 1.11.1 prescribes the device and rule 1.11.2 the duty: the registrant “shall stamp with his/her seal” all original sheets of working drawings, the project manual cover or index pages and all Addenda, and “Preliminary documents that are not sealed should be marked as ‘preliminary’ or ‘not for construction.’” Rule 1.11.3 completes it by requiring the registrant to superimpose a signature and date across the face of the seal.
What must appear on the seal
- Your name
- Your registration number
- Registered Landscape Architect State of Mississippi
Three elements and a fixed shape, with the wording differing from the architect device issued by the same Board. Mississippi says Registered Landscape Architect State of Mississippi here and Registered Architect State of Mississippi at Pt. 201, R. 3.4, and the two are not interchangeable even though one Board administers both. Nothing about a firm, a discipline or an expiry date is authorized on the face. Rules 1.11.4 and 1.11.5 deal with consultant seals and with the prohibition on affixing a seal to documents that exclude the registrant’s name.
Size and shape
Circular and two inches in diameter. Rule 1.11.1: “The seal to be used by the registrants are to be circular in form and 2 inches in diameter.” A single figure, not a range, and a different figure from the Mississippi architect seal, which is fixed at one and one-half inches under Pt. 201, R. 3.4. The Mississippi engineer and surveyor range at Pt. 901, R. 6.2.2.b is 1 5/8 to 2 inches, so a two inch device is right here and is at the top of the band there.
Embosser, rubber stamp or digital
Not addressed as a list of devices. Rule 1.11 prescribes the geometry and the wording and speaks of stamping with the seal; it does not name an embosser, a rubber stamp or a computer generated seal. What rule 1.11.3 does address is the signature format: a manual signature, a digital signature with an electronic authentication process, or, for PDF formats, an electronic scanned signature that accurately depicts the licensee’s actual signature. Because the signature and date must be superimposed across the face of the seal, an inked stamp is the safe buy.
Signing and dating
Superimposed across the face of the seal. Rule 1.11.3 requires the registrant to superimpose the signature, which may be manual, electronic or digital, and the date across the seal face. Three signature formats are permitted: a manual signature, a digital signature with an electronic authentication process, and for PDF formats an electronic scanned signature that accurately depicts the licensee’s actual signature. Beside the seal is not what the rule describes, and a scanned signature that does not accurately depict the actual signature does not qualify.
Two inches here, one and a half inches for architects, same Board
The Mississippi State Board of Architecture administers both credentials, and the two seal sizes are different. Rule 1.11.1 of Part 202 sets the landscape architect seal at two inches in diameter. Rule 3.4 of Part 201 sets the architect seal at one and one-half inches. Same Board, same state, two dies, and a firm ordering both at once is the classic way to get one of them wrong.
Which documents must be sealed
All original sheets of working drawings, the project manual cover or index pages, and all Addenda, under rule 1.11.2. The carve-out is labelling: preliminary documents that are not sealed should be marked preliminary or not for construction. Rule 1.11.4 addresses consultant seals and rule 1.11.5 restricts affixing a seal to documents that do not include the registrant’s name.
Electronic and digital seals
Mississippi handles the electronic question through the signature rather than the seal image. Rule 1.11.3 permits a digital signature with an electronic authentication process, and for PDF formats an electronic scanned signature that accurately depicts the licensee’s actual signature. No certificate authority, cryptographic standard or approved vendor is named, and there is no stripping language for uncertified transmissions in rule 1.11. The Board’s engineering and surveying counterpart at Pt. 901 has its own, differently worded electronic provisions, which do not reach a landscape architect.
Renewal, lapse and retirement
Not addressed in the seal rule. Rule 1.11 governs the device, its use, consultants and unauthorized affixation, and does not say what happens on expiration, suspension or revocation, whether the registration number changes on reinstatement, or whether the seal must be surrendered. The sources here are rule 1.11 in full from the Part 202 rule document. Note the currency: Part 202 was last amended 5/1/2025, so check the effective text before quoting. Contrast the Mississippi architect rule, where rule 3.4 makes an approved seal imprint a condition of an active license.
Firm requirements
Not addressed in the seal rule. Rule 1.11.1 limits the face to the registrant’s name, registration number and the Registered Landscape Architect State of Mississippi wording, and rule 1.11.5 restricts affixing a seal to documents that exclude the registrant’s name. No firm seal or firm number appears in the rule. Take any entity requirement from the current text of Part 202 rather than by analogy to Miss. Code Ann. § 73-13-43, which requires a certificate of authority for engineering and surveying firms only.
What to check before you order
Order a circular device exactly two inches in diameter carrying your name, your registration number and the words Registered Landscape Architect State of Mississippi. Do not order to the one and one-half inch Mississippi architect figure; the same Board sets different sizes for the two credentials. The rule names no device, so buy an inked stamp, because your signature and the date have to be superimposed across the face of the seal. Stamp all original sheets of working drawings, the project manual cover or index pages and every addendum. Mark unsealed preliminary documents as preliminary or not for construction. If you sign a PDF with a scanned signature, it must accurately depict your actual signature.

Frequently asked questions
Is a seal required for landscape architects in Mississippi?
Yes. Rule 1.11, headed Official Seal, carries the whole regime. Rule 1.11.1 prescribes the device and rule 1.11.2 the duty: the registrant “shall stamp with his/her seal” all original sheets of working drawings, the project manual cover or index pages and all Addenda. Rule 1.11.3 completes it by requiring the registrant to superimpose a signature and date across the face of the seal.
What has to appear on a Mississippi landscape architect seal?
Three elements: your name, your registration number, and the words Registered Landscape Architect State of Mississippi. Nothing about a firm, a discipline or an expiry date is authorized. Rules 1.11.4 and 1.11.5 deal separately with consultant seals and with the prohibition on affixing a seal to documents that exclude the registrant’s name.
What size is a Mississippi landscape architect seal?
Circular and two inches in diameter, a single figure rather than a range, under rule 1.11.1. That is a different figure from the Mississippi architect seal, fixed at one and one-half inches under Pt. 201, R. 3.4, even though one Board administers both credentials.
Which device does Mississippi require?
Rule 1.11 prescribes the geometry and the wording and speaks of stamping with the seal, without naming an embosser, a rubber stamp or a computer generated seal. Because rule 1.11.3 requires the signature and date to be superimposed across the face of the seal, an inked stamp is the practical buy.
Where do the signature and date go in Mississippi?
Across the face of the seal. Rule 1.11.3 requires the registrant to superimpose the signature, which may be manual, electronic or digital, and the date across the seal face. Beside the seal is not what the rule describes.
Which Mississippi documents have to be sealed?
All original sheets of working drawings, the project manual cover or index pages, and all Addenda, under rule 1.11.2. Addenda are named expressly, which is worth knowing when a bid package changes late and the unsealed addendum goes out with the set.
What about preliminary documents in Mississippi?
Rule 1.11.2 handles them by labelling: “Preliminary documents that are not sealed should be marked as ‘preliminary’ or ‘not for construction.’”
Can I sign a Mississippi sealed document electronically?
Mississippi handles the electronic question through the signature rather than the seal image. Rule 1.11.3 permits a digital signature with an electronic authentication process, and for PDF formats an electronic scanned signature that accurately depicts the licensee’s actual signature. No certificate authority, cryptographic standard or approved vendor is named, and there is no stripping language for uncertified transmissions. The Board’s engineering and surveying counterpart at Pt. 901 has its own, differently worded electronic provisions, which do not reach a landscape architect.
What happens to a Mississippi seal on lapse?
Rule 1.11 governs the device, its use, consultants and unauthorized affixation, and does not say what happens on expiration, suspension or revocation, whether the registration number changes on reinstatement, or whether the seal must be surrendered. Part 202 was last amended 5/1/2025, so check the effective text before quoting. Contrast the Mississippi architect rule, where rule 3.4 makes an approved seal imprint a condition of an active license.
Does a Mississippi landscape architecture firm get a seal?
The seal rule prescribes none. Rule 1.11.1 limits the face to your name, registration number and the Registered Landscape Architect State of Mississippi wording, and rule 1.11.5 restricts affixing a seal to documents that exclude the registrant’s name. Take any entity requirement from the current text of Part 202 rather than by analogy to Miss. Code Ann. § 73-13-43, which requires a certificate of authority for engineering and surveying firms only.
