Montana administers more than forty professional licensing boards and none of them covers interior design. The Department of Labor and Industry, Business Standards Division, publishes the complete list, and the design and technical boards on it are the Board of Architects and Landscape Architects and the Board of Professional Engineers and Professional Land Surveyors. There is no Montana interior design board, no ARM chapter for the profession, no registration number to inscribe and no legend to letter.

Which means nothing is prescribed for your stamp and therefore nothing is restricted. No diameter, no wording, no approved artwork, nothing to file. It becomes a design decision, and Acorn will make it to whatever you want on it: your own name, your firm name, a monogram, your logo, or a credential you actually hold such as NCIDQ.

Montana draws its title line unusually widely, and that is worth knowing before lettering anything ornamental. Mont. Code Ann. § 37-65-301 forbids practicing architecture or using the title architect or licensed architect, or “any words, letters, figures, or other device” implying it, and § 37-66-302 addresses illegal use of the landscape architect title. A device is expressly named in that prohibition. Put your own name, your firm name, and any credential you actually hold, such as NCIDQ. Leave off “Licensed” and “Registered” and any state-issued title unless the state issued you one.

Is a seal required in Montana?

Montana does not license, register or certify interior designers, and therefore issues no interior designer seal. The Montana Department of Labor and Industry, Business Standards Division, publishes the complete list of the professional licensing boards and programs it administers, which runs to more than forty boards, and interior design is not among them. The design and technical boards on that list are the Board of Architects and Landscape Architects and the Board of Professional Engineers and Professional Land Surveyors. There is no Montana board, no ARM chapter for interior design, no registration number to inscribe and no legend to letter.

What must appear on the seal

  • Montana licenses no interior designers and issues no interior designer seal

There is nothing to specify. Because Montana grants no interior design credential, no wording is authorized and no wording is prohibited by a licensing board. What is policed is the neighboring title: Mont. Code Ann. § 37-65-301 forbids practicing architecture or using the title architect or licensed architect, or “any words, letters, figures, or other device” implying it, without qualifying under the chapter, and § 37-66-302 addresses illegal use of the landscape architect title. A Montana interior design device must not drift toward either.

Size and shape

No dimension exists. Montana prescribes no interior designer seal, so there is no diameter to state. The sources here are the Business Standards Division licensing boards listing and MCA Title 37 chapters 65 and 66 and 67 for the three Montana design and technical credentials.

Embosser, rubber stamp or digital

Not a regulated purchase. Any device a Montana interior designer uses is a business or identification stamp, not a professional seal, and it carries no statutory effect. A Montana building official cannot accept an interior designer stamp in place of an architect seal, because Mont. Code Ann. § 37-65-308 gives the licensed architect a statutory seal and § 37-65-301 bars unlicensed practice and title use.

Signing and dating

Not addressed, because Montana has no interior design credential to attach a signature duty to. Where a Montana project requires sealed documents, the duty falls on the licensed architect under § 37-65-308, the licensed landscape architect under § 37-66-308(2), or the professional engineer or professional land surveyor under § 37-67-314.

There is no Montana interior designer stamp to buy, and that is the answer

The Montana Department of Labor and Industry administers more than forty licensing boards through its Business Standards Division. Two of them matter to the design professions: the Board of Architects and Landscape Architects and the Board of Professional Engineers and Professional Land Surveyors. Interior design is not on the list, there is no ARM chapter for it, and no Montana agency issues a number that could go on a seal.

Which documents must be sealed

No Montana document requires an interior designer seal. The landscape architect statute states the sealing duty most explicitly of the three: under § 37-66-308(2) all drawings and title pages of specifications prepared by or under the supervision of a landscape architect must bear that architect’s seal, and that seal cannot replace the seals of licensed architects, professional engineers or land surveyors.

Electronic and digital seals

Not applicable. Montana has no interior design credential and therefore no electronic interior designer seal standard. Note that Montana publishes no verified electronic seal standard for its licensed professions either, because ARM Title 24 chapters 114 and 183 could not be read for this research.

Renewal, lapse and retirement

Not applicable. With no credential there is no renewal cycle, no lapse, no number to change and no device to surrender.

Firm requirements

Not applicable. Montana registers no interior design firm and issues no certificate of authorization for interior design. The certificate of authorization Montana does issue, under Mont. Code Ann. § 37-67-328, reaches business entities registered with the Montana secretary of state that practice engineering or land surveying.

What to check before you order

You do not need, and cannot lawfully obtain, a Montana interior designer seal, because Montana does not license or register the profession. If you want a device for your own drawings, order a plain identification stamp with your name and firm, and describe any out-of-state credential as that state’s credential. Keep the words architect and landscape architect off it, and keep the design plain: Mont. Code Ann. § 37-65-301 forbids using any words, letters, figures or other device implying that you are an architect. If your work is going to a Montana building official, the sealed document has to carry the seal of the licensed architect, landscape architect, professional engineer or professional land surveyor in responsible charge.

Frequently asked questions

Does Montana license interior designers?

No. The Business Standards Division licensing boards listing names every board the Division administers, and interior design is not among them. MCA Title 37 chapters 65, 66 and 67 cover architects, landscape architects, and engineers and land surveyors respectively, and none creates an interior design credential.

Is an interior designer seal required in Montana?

No rule requires one and none is prescribed. Montana’s sealing duties belong to the credentials it issues: Mont. Code Ann. § 37-65-308 gives the licensed architect a statutory seal, § 37-66-308(2) covers landscape architects and § 37-67-314 covers professional engineers and land surveyors.

What can I put on a Montana interior designer stamp?

Anything true about you: your name, your firm name, contact details, or the exact name of a private certification such as the NCIDQ certificate from the Council for Interior Design Qualification. Keep the design plain, for the reason the next answer gives, and size and shape are otherwise yours.

Why should a Montana interior designer stamp stay plain?

Because of how § 37-65-301 is drafted. It forbids not only practicing architecture and using the title but using “any words, letters, figures, or other device” indicating or intending to imply that the person is an architect. A device is named in the prohibition itself, which makes ornamental board-style artwork a worse idea in Montana than in most states.

What size should a Montana interior designer stamp be?

Any size. Montana prescribes no interior designer seal and therefore no diameter. Neither the Business Standards Division listing nor MCA Title 37 chapters 65, 66 and 67 offers a figure for the profession.

Who seals a Montana project that needs sealed documents?

The licensed architect, landscape architect, professional engineer or professional land surveyor in responsible charge. The landscape architect statute states the duty most explicitly of the three: § 37-66-308(2) requires all drawings and title pages of specifications prepared by or under the supervision of a landscape architect to bear that architect’s seal, and provides that the seal cannot replace the seals of licensed architects, professional engineers or land surveyors.

Will a Montana building official accept my stamp?

Not in place of an architect’s. Mont. Code Ann. § 37-65-308 gives the licensed architect a statutory seal and § 37-65-301 bars unlicensed practice and title use. Any device you carry is a business or identification stamp with no statutory effect.

Does my out-of-state interior design credential count in Montana?

It describes a credential the issuing state grants. A Registered Interior Designer stamp from Alabama, Arkansas, Iowa or Louisiana, and a Certified Interior Designer credential from Kentucky or Maine, all describe real credentials elsewhere and none in Montana. Describe any out-of-state credential as that state’s credential.

Is there an electronic sealing standard in Montana?

Montana has no interior design credential and therefore no electronic interior designer seal standard. It publishes no verified electronic seal standard for its licensed professions here either, so if you need one for a project, put the question to the board that licenses the professional sealing the set.

Does a Montana interior design firm need a certificate of authorization?

No. The certificate of authorization Montana does issue, under Mont. Code Ann. § 37-67-328, reaches business entities registered with the Montana secretary of state that practice engineering or land surveying. Montana registers no interior design firm and issues no firm seal.
