The rubber stamp ban people quote for New Jersey is not the architects’ rule. It sits in N.J.A.C. 13:40-8.1(a), a rule of the State Board of Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors, which requires a digital or impression type seal and says “Alternatives, such as rubber stamp facsimiles of the seal shall not be permitted.” Architects are licensed by a different board, the New Jersey State Board of Architects, and their rules sit in a different chapter, N.J.A.C. 13:27. The engineers’ chapter does not reach them.

An Alabama architect seal is circular and two inches in diameter, and that is a single figure rather than a range. Rule 100-X-5-.03 says so in one sentence, and it fixes the layout as well as the wording: an outer circle reading STATE OF ALABAMA across the top and REGISTERED ARCHITECT across the bottom, with your name and your registration number inside an inner circle. A single-ring stamp carrying all four items is still wrong, because the rule puts the name and number “inside the inner circle.”

Your city is a required element of a Wisconsin seal. A-E 2.02(1) lists exactly three things: “Each seal shall include the credential holder’s name, credential number and city.” City, not state and not county. Very few states ask for one, so a stamp ordered from a national template will simply lack the line, and an architect who moves practice from Madison to Milwaukee has a seal whose required content no longer matches.

A Wyoming seal proves nothing unless it is signed and dated. Chapter 9 Section 3(c) is drafted as a conditional: the seal is prima facie evidence that the technical submission was prepared by or under the responsible control of the individual named on it “only if the seal has been signed and dated.” Most states require a signature and a date without saying what happens if you skip them. Wyoming says it. A stamped but unsigned sheet gives up the evidentiary presumption the seal exists to create.

Your signature goes across the seal, and every drawing sheet gets one. WAC 308-12-081(4)(a)(iv) puts the handwritten identification “across the seal or stamp,” not beside it. That is the opposite of the Washington landscape architect rule in the next chapter, WAC 308-13-055(4)(a)(iv), which places the identification adjacent. Same state, two chapters, two placements. Size the die so a signature over the middle still leaves the registration number readable.

An unsealed West Virginia submission does not just fail review, it voids the permit. W. Va. Code § 30-12-7(b) is addressed to the other side of the counter. Municipal building inspectors may not accept technical submissions involving the practice of architecture unless they bear the required seal or the seal of a registered engineer, or unless the applicant certifies an applicable exception. Then comes the sentence that matters: “A building permit issued with respect to technical submissions which do not conform with the requirements of this section is invalid.” Not voidable at the inspector’s discretion. Invalid.

Three items go next to every Delaware seal, not two. Rule 7.6.2 requires that at each place the seal is imprinted on a technical submission going for a permit there be an original or electronic signature, the date of that signature, and “the date of expiration of the architect’s Delaware registration,” all in close proximity to the seal and in a format substantially similar to the three labeled lines the rule prints. Very few states ask for an expiry date at all, and Delaware asks for it every place the seal appears.
